It goes without saying that Coke and Pepsi are two of the biggest names in soda around the world. Even as I write this article I look over at the shelf beside me and see a line of Coke bottles from around the world that I’ve collected over the past couple decades. In an article found on Coca-Cola’s UK website, there are approximately 1.7 billion servings of Coke sold worldwide every day!
In recent news it was published that both Coke and Pepsi had to make some changes to their formula to avoid some undesired publicity. This all came about not because they became aware of a potential health risk to their customers but because California law that demands drinks with a certain level of carcinogens display a warning. While scientists say there are no immediate health concerns associated with either product, one has to wonder why there would be any carcinogens in there to begin with! Recently California added 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI) to a list of carcinogens, therefore requiring all companies that use a certain level of this chemical to post a cancer warning label on their product.
In an attempt to avoid the cancer warning and unwanted publicity, both companies contacted their suppliers in order to reduce the level of the chemical 4-methylimidazole, which is a component of the caramel coloring. Both companies plan to permanently change their recipes across the US however the rest of England and Europe will be unchanged.
Will you be drinking less Coke or Pepsi now?
