National Cancer Survivors Day

DCA CancerAccording to the National Cancer Institute (at the National Institutes of Health), June 3 is National Cancer Survivors Day.

A diagnosis of cancer can change everything about a person; relationships, career, lifestyle, and priorities.  A survivor of the disease will often talk about appreciating life more, and so this day is dedicated to those people.  This day is for those who have beaten the odds, defeated the disease, and have found a new life.. cancer free.

Survival Statistics

The sad truth about cancer statistics is that 68% of people diagnosed are only expected to live at least five years.  Without some form of treatment, the survival rate of cancer patients is almost always 0%.  Thankfully, we at DCACancer.org have seen a lot of those odds changed for the better.

Most cancer survivors are survivors of common cancers such as breast cancer (22%), prostate cancer (20%), colorectal cancer (9%), and gynecological cancer (8%) which includes uterine, ovarian, and cervical cancers.  These percentages are largely attributed to improved screenings, early detection, improvements in treatments, more effective treatments, and targeted therapies.

So from those of us at DCACancer.org, we want to say congratulations to everyone who has beaten this horrible disease.  May you live a long, healthy, prosperous life.
